Metro Averages 3 Wrecks Per Day
In 2009 alone, Metro buses were involved in over 1,000 collisions in Houston and surrounding areas, according to a recent Houston Chronicle article. Those collisions, many of which were considered largely preventable, often resulted in injuries to bus riders, other drivers and even pedestrians. That figure approaches an average of nearly three wrecks per day.
According to the Chronicle’s review of Metro, 338 of these accidents could have been avoided and 220 caused in excess of $1,000.00 in damages or sent people to the hospital. The Chronicle found documented evidence of 1,029 incidents.
The Chronicle also examined traffic citations issued to Metro bus drivers over the past five years and discovered more than 850 citations with nearly 400 of those being related to speed in some way.
